Debbie Salyards, RN

Favorite Quote: “Do ordinary things with extraordinary love.” -Mother Theresa
Hobbies: Zumba, drawing, reading, and golf.
Loves: Family time, playing games, and nature.
Something People Don’t Know About You: I have a brown belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
One of Your Most Memorable Experiences As A Nurse: One night I was working at a stand-alone Birthing Center as an Agency Nurse. I was the most experienced nurse on shift that night. One of the other nurses had a patient that had a very difficult delivery and the baby was not breathing, so she called a code. When I entered the room I saw chaos. The Midwife was trying to stabilize the mom because she was hemorrhaging, the father and mother-in-law were crying hysterically in the corner of the room, and the two nurses coding the baby appeared panic-stricken. I took a deep breath and allowed all of my years of nursing experience to take over. In my calmest voice I reassured the father and the patient’s mother-in-law, I redirected one of the nurses to help the Midwife stabilize the patient and then I turned my attention to the baby. After calming the other nurse and reminding her that she knew what to do, we were able to get the baby intubated and get him ready for transport. The ambulance arrived after what seemed like an eternity, and the baby and mom were transported to a local hospital. When I checked on them a few days later I learned that they were both healthy and well. Even though we were complete strangers, as nurses we trusted each other and got the job done. I love my job!

Shauna Hamby, RN

Favorite Quote: “Some people complain because God put thorns on roses, while others praise him for putting roses among thorns.” I love asking people what their interpretation of this quote is. My Dad asked myself and my sisters this when we were young girls. We all explained what we thought the quote meant and waited for him to tell us the true meaning or give us some inspirational speech. He didn’t. He died a few weeks later. He taught me a valuable lesson at a young age, that pain is inevitable, but beauty can always be found. Even amongst all those thorns, he was my rose.
Hobbies: Traveling and exploring different cultures is my favorite. There is so much beauty in diversity. Also, after being asked to list some of my hobbies, my newest hobby is to find some hobbies.
Loves: I love spending time with my family, especially my kids, Vic (13) and Abi (10). They both have the best sense of humor and keep me laughing. I also love bubble baths and I love chocolate. I love eating chocolate while I’m in the bubble bath.
Something People Don’t Know About You: I am one of five girls and I’m a twin. All of our names start with the letter “S.” Seleka, Sharah, Shauna, Sophie, and Skyler. P.S. I’m the funniest.
One of Your Most Memorable Experiences As A Nurse: My background is mostly in emergency nursing. Most emergency nurses are scared of a laboring Mama. I’m not. I love hearing the words “precipitous delivery” over the EMS radio. So, while all my coworkers are “too busy” to help with what’s incoming, I’m grabbing the baby warmer and getting ready to help welcome a sweet bundle of joy into the world. I knew in school, I wanted to specialize in women’s health when I saw my first delivery as a Nursing student and cried at what a beautiful experience it was and now I’m reminded of that passion, every time a “precipitous delivery” comes in those ER doors. I started in emergency nursing because I needed to build a nursing foundation first. Once I did that, I was ready to dive into women’s health. I have been so blessed to work for Southern Crescent Women’s Healthcare and help take care of all of our beautiful women and sweet expecting Mamas. Thank you all for trusting us with your care.

One of Your Most Memorable Experiences As A Nurse: I have so many but if I had to choose one it would be laboring one of my favorite OBGYN doctor’s whose husband is a neonatologist. He was so excited about having their baby – he was jumping all around the birthing room. It was beautiful.

Nydia Stanley, RN

Favorite Quote:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;

In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”

-Proverbs 3:5-6

Hobbies: Spending time with family and bike riding.
Loves: Traveling, beaches and babies.
Something People Don’t Know About You: I’ve been an Alto saxophone player since the age of 10.
One of Your Most Memorable Experiences As A Nurse: I was the triage nurse in L&D one night and a patient came onto the unit complaining of contractions at 33 weeks. The patient was crying and alone when she arrived. After getting her checked in, she began to tell me she did not feel safe at home with her 2 children. At this time the patient was staying with her grandmother and cousins. She began to cry again and mumbled that her cousins are very inappropriate with her and her children. One of the cousins in their home was the reason she was pregnant. I went back to the nursing station to find shelters and other homes for women and children. I gave the list of shelters her and she was thankful for the extra help I gave her. After her discharge, we kept in touch and I found out she left her grandmother’s house with her kids and moved into a shelter for 3 weeks and was able to get government assisted living. These moments are important to me as a nurse because going above and beyond the call of duty is what makes a good nurse GREAT!
